Rescue Me ID: 15-04-09-00038Seeley (female)

Chihuahua    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Most Cats
Personality: Average Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current, Abused/Neglected

Seeley went into foster care about a year ago from animal control with clear signs of an abusive past. She doesn't like strangers getting near her, hates being cornered, has sensitivity around her neck and has a lot of walls up until she knows you won't hurt her. Seeley has the capability to be a loving sidekick but it takes a few weeks to gain her trust and in those few weeks, she can be a bit mean and everyone who has expressed interest in her has changed their minds about proceeding with adoption because of that. Once she gets over that hump though, she's a sweet and loyal dog. I've learned the best way to work with her is not to force ... (Read More)her to do anything or try to pick her up until she seeks you out. The first time she came to my house, it took 24 hours for her to end up in my lap. A week for her to let me pick her up and 2-3 weeks until I could mess with her neck which for some unknown reason, she has issues with. I'm sure something in her past is the source of this. She will never be the type of dog that can be petted by strangers, will do well at a vet or that will welcome visitors in your home. However, her tough girl attitude is really all show. She will snap at strangers and show her teeth but she's not one to lunge or bite. She just wants to be left alone if she doesn't know you. Seeley is very food motivated and this is definitely the way to her heart. To get her comfortable with being picked up, we would let her climb into our laps on her terms and then we'd pick her up and take her to the pantry for a peanut butter treat. In no time, she was begging to be picked up. She really needs a patient home that is willing to put up with her initial fear and lifelong quirks and I'm certain that home is out there and we just haven't found it yet. We have videos of the worst of Seeley and videos of the best of Seeley when she's finally relaxed and comfortable and we are happy to share them all. In the right hands, she'll do really well.
